"My daughter recommended Dr. Higginbotham to me after moving here a few months ago. She was absolutely wonderful and solved all the issues I had previously had with my hearing aids. "

Digital Therapeutics

Digital therapeutics are structured treatment programs delivered through a smartphone app. For tinnitus, they draw on cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation training, and sound therapy to help change how you respond to the sound over time. We use them alongside the rest of our tinnitus care, giving you something practical to work with at home between appointments.

Most tinnitus programs combine several approaches, each addressing a different part of the experience. Here is what they generally include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Exercises: Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, looks at the thoughts and reactions that build up around tinnitus. Structured lessons help you recognize patterns, such as expecting a poor night's sleep, and practice responding to them differently.
  • Relaxation and Mindfulness: Stress and tinnitus tend to feed one another. Breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness practice can settle that response and reduce how much of your attention the sound takes up.
  • Sound Therapy: Programs include libraries of soundscapes and gentle noise you can adjust to your own preference. Adding quiet sound to a silent room reduces the contrast that makes tinnitus stand out, which supports the process of habituation.
  • Sleep Support: Tinnitus is often most intrusive at night, when there is little else to listen to. These programs cover sleep routines, wind-down habits, and how to handle waking during the night without the sound taking over.
  • Progress Tracking: You can record how you are doing over time and set small goals along the way. This is genuinely useful, since change with tinnitus tends to be gradual and can be easy to overlook day to day.

One program we can discuss with you is Oto. It was founded by two former military doctors who developed tinnitus themselves, and it is built around CBT delivered as short daily audio sessions of roughly ten minutes. The app also includes courses on sleep and concentration, a library of sounds, and access to its support team. Oto reports that 86 percent of users notice some benefit within the first month.

Cognitive behavioral therapy has the strongest research base of any tinnitus treatment and appears in clinical guidelines internationally. It does not remove the sound, but it does reduce the distress and disruption that come with it. Research into app-based delivery is more recent, though studies so far suggest structured digital programs can produce meaningful improvement, particularly when they are paired with support from a clinician.

Before recommending any program, we begin with a hearing evaluation and a full conversation about your tinnitus. That tells us whether hearing loss is contributing, helps identify anything that warrants medical review, and gives us a clearer sense of which combination of approaches is likely to suit you.

We treat digital therapeutics as one part of a wider plan rather than something to use on its own. Depending on your situation, that plan might also include Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, hearing aids where hearing loss is a factor, or the Lenire device. The app gives you daily practice, while your appointments with us provide the assessment and direction that keep things moving in the right direction.

These programs may suit you if you want to begin working on your tinnitus right away, if regular travel to appointments is difficult, or if you would like to reinforce what you are already doing in therapy. Cost is generally low compared with in-person counseling, and most offer a trial period before you subscribe. Follow-up can often be handled through a virtual consultation.

It helps to have a clear picture of what these programs offer. They are a way of learning to live more comfortably with tinnitus rather than a cure, and progress usually unfolds over weeks and months rather than days. Getting real value from one depends on using it consistently, which is something we will talk through honestly with you at the outset.

If tinnitus is affecting your sleep, your concentration, or your general wellbeing, there are practical steps you can take. Digital therapeutics are one of several options available, and we can help you work out whether a program like Oto makes sense for your situation.
