Earwax buildup is one of those things people put off dealing with until it's genuinely bothering them. Maybe sounds seem muffled. Maybe there's a fullness in your ear that won't go away. Maybe you tried a cotton swab and made things worse. If any of that sounds familiar, you're not alone, and getting it checked out is easier than most people expect.
Why Earwax Builds Up in the First Place
Earwax, or cerumen, actually does a job for your body. It traps dust and debris, protects the ear canal, and usually works its way out on its own. But for some people, wax accumulates faster than it clears, or gets pushed deeper into the canal by cotton swabs, earbuds, or hearing aids.
Hearing aid wearers deal with this more than most. The device sits right where wax tends to collect, which means regular buildup can affect how well the hearing aid actually performs. That's one more reason to have it managed by a professional rather than left alone.
What Happens During the Appointment
Using an otoscope, we get a clear view of your ear canal and eardrum before doing anything else. This step matters. It tells us how much wax is present, where it's sitting, and whether there's anything else going on that needs attention first, like an infection or a perforated eardrum.
From there, removal depends on what we find. A few methods we might use:
- Microsuction: a gentle vacuum-based tool that removes wax without introducing water into the ear
- Curettage: a small curette used to carefully lift wax out under direct visualization
- Irrigation: warm water flushes the wax out, used when appropriate for the situation
None of these should hurt. Most patients describe the sensation as odd or ticklish at worst. If your ears are sensitive, tell us and we'll adjust the approach.
How Long It Takes
Here's the part that surprises people: it's fast. A straightforward earwax removal appointment usually takes somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes. Stubborn or impacted wax might take a little longer, especially if we need to soften it first or work in stages to avoid discomfort.
You're not blocking out your whole afternoon for this. Walk in, get it handled, and walk out hearing better.
What You'll Notice Afterward
The change is often immediate. Sounds that were dull suddenly have edges again. Conversations feel less like they're happening behind a wall. Some patients are surprised by how much they'd adjusted to muffled hearing without realizing it, until it's gone.
That fullness or pressure feeling? Usually resolves right away too. And if you wear hearing aids, clearing the canal often means the devices fit and perform the way they're supposed to again.
We'll also let you know if we spot anything during the exam that's worth a closer look, whether that's a hearing evaluation or something else. Earwax removal is often the first step that reveals a hearing issue that had been masked all along.
