Oticon Zeal is the most discreet, complete hearing aid Oticon has released to date — a rechargeable, AI-powered, Bluetooth-connected device that fits entirely in the ear canal without forcing the tradeoffs that have historically come with that style.
The Core Problem Oticon Set Out to Solve
For years, small in-the-ear hearing aids meant making compromises. You could have a discreet fit, or you could have modern features like rechargeability, wireless streaming, and advanced sound processing — but rarely both in the same device. Oticon Zeal was built specifically to solve this issue.
A New Way of Building Hearing Aids
The technology that makes Zeal possible starts with how it's manufactured. Oticon developed an encapsulation process that surrounds the internal components in a solid, protective material — leaving no hollow spaces inside the device. This approach, more commonly seen in industries like aerospace and medical devices, protects the electronics from moisture and physical stress in a way traditional hearing aid shells cannot.
This isn't just a durability story. The encapsulation is what allows Oticon to pack a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AI processing chip, and Bluetooth antenna into a device small enough to sit almost entirely out of sight in the ear canal. In testing across 1,500+ ears, Zeal was not visible or only slightly visible in 94% of cases where there was a good fit.
AI Sound Processing Without Compromise
Zeal runs on Oticon's Sirius chip — the same platform powering their Intent hearing aids — with second-generation Deep Neural Network processing (DNN 2.0). This AI is always on, analyzing sound continuously to separate speech from background noise.
DNN 2.0 uses 256-channel analysis compared to 24 channels in the previous generation, giving it significantly finer control over what gets amplified and what gets reduced. In practical terms, this means cleaner speech in noisy environments without the over-processed sound some users notice with aggressive noise reduction.
Rather than relying on dual-microphone beamforming (which isn't possible in a single-piece in-ear design), Zeal uses the natural shape of the ear to capture spatial cues, with the DNN handling noise reduction from there. Oticon reports up to 6 dB of signal-to-noise ratio improvement over an unaided ear — meaningful performance from a device this size.
Rechargeability and Battery Life
One of the most common objections to small in-ear hearing aids has been battery life. Disposable batteries in tiny devices run out quickly, and rechargeable options in this form factor simply haven't existed — until now.
Zeal offers up to 20 hours of battery life on a full charge, with quick-charge capability providing 4 hours of use from just 15 minutes of charging. The battery is rated for around 2,000 charging cycles, which translates to well over five years of typical use.
Connectivity in a CIC-Sized Device
Bluetooth streaming in a completely-in-canal-style hearing aid is rare. Zeal achieves this through a wraparound antenna — a flexible cord that doubles as a retention arm and removal tool — designed to maintain skin contact for a stable connection.
The device supports Bluetooth LE Audio, Google Fast Pair, hands-free calling, and Auracast, which is already fully activated (no firmware update required). Auracast allows hearing aids to receive audio broadcasts directly from compatible public venues like theaters, airports, and places of worship. Zeal also connects with the Oticon Companion app for volume, program, and sound adjustments on the go.
Fitting Flexibility
Unlike traditional custom in-the-ear hearing aids that require ear impressions and a multi-week wait, Zeal can be fit the same day using standard domes — the same domes used for Oticon Intent. For patients who prefer a more customized fit, micro-molds are also available. Oticon reports a good dome fit in approximately two out of three people.
This flexibility matters in a clinical setting. It means patients can leave their first appointment hearing better, with the option to move to a custom fit if needed.
